Like many California Small Businesses, Hairendipity has reopened and is committed to ensuring our clients' and stylists' health and safety is our top priority. We are navigating unprecedented challenges brought on by Coronavirus. Although we are always following and keeping up to date with cleanliness and sanitation standards in the industry, we have recently added additional safety practices in accordance with California Department of Public Health's industry guidance, to include:
We pray that our stylists and extended salon family continue to remain healthy and medically unaffected by the Covid-19 Pandemic.
We continue to receive an outstanding amount of support from those near and far. With such limited ability to operate our business our salon and stylists are suffering.
The PUA (Pandemic Unemployment Assistance) pays us 𝙖𝙡𝙡 a flat $450/week, regardless of what our income was prior. For those of you that receive our services, you know that is no more than 1 day’s pay for most of us!
With the additional $600/week benefit expiring and no end in sight to the shut-down of our sector specifically, we decided we had to do something. Get creative. Raise some funds.
And with the constricted schedules of stylists and barbers statewide we know that many of you are running around looking ragged!
With our outdoor permit in-hand, @_hairendipity Salon will be hosting a fundraiser by offering free haircuts to all of our First Responders & Medical Staff. 👨⚕️👩⚕️👮♂️👩🚒 Haircuts will be rendered free of charge with request for donations.

"Good afternoon, my name is Lia Rivera and I own a hair salon in Vacaville.
I have made the decision to reopen my business effective immediately. Like many business owners in California I am frustrated. I have applied for every assistance option available, including the PPP through 3 different lenders, the EIDL, the EIDL advance, plus 3 private grants ($500-$5000). I even attempted the Facebook business grant, but learned our county does not qualify. Frustrating, as I spend thousands of dollars in advertising via Facebook every year. I have not received a cent from a single one. In fact until yesterday I hadn’t received so much as an acknowledgement from a single one.
I am optimistic about filing for PUA tomorrow; Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. However I am beyond discouraged with the program already. First of all, the program goes into effect accepting initial applications TOMORROW. That’s right, tomorrow. Nearly 90 days from the day that the EDD will grant retroactive assistance, nearly 60 days from the day California was declared a State of Emergency due to Covid-19, and nearly 6 weeks from the day we were executively ordered to stay home and close our businesses.
Why did this take so long? Is the EDD aware of how many business owners know NOTHING of this PUA program? Does the EDD have a clue how many business owners have applied for UI (per constant recommendation of the president and media) and been denied? I personally invested a solid 3 days at the onset of the Executive Order to research what was available to us and read relevant segments of the order in detail. It wasn’t until last week that the EDD’s site presented any type of information on a new, pandemic-specific program coming available. Calling the EDD gets you a chat with a robot saying they are receiving too many calls to handle and try again later. Every day, every hour of the day. With a denial letter in hand and no way of successfully communicating with them this has left thousands of business owners with the belief that, well, we’re screwed.
My decision for reopening my business is based mainly on the evidence that I cannot trust the word of our government. In addition to lack of substance to the promises made there seems to be a major disconnect between what actually IS available and what is being broadcast.
Why aren’t we talking about tomorrow, April 28th, 2020 being a big day in America for all of us small business owners who have been overlooked by the SBA? This will affect us as much as the ups and downs connected to the PPP and in fact, could be the bail out we need in lieu of the PPP.
I cannot control, trust, or predict what is going on but I can control, trust and predict my own actions. I can control who enters my business and how it is cared for. As of today, we are set to open in 2 weeks. With no specific instruction on how to reopen safely? At this point the approx $10k/mo loss is a drop in the bucket compared to the fine. With no plans in place to safely restart our economy I am done hiding from this in exchange for guaranteeing my business’s closure. I would like to let the community know, and our government know the measures we are taking to open safely and effectively control the spread. I would like to encourage other salons in our area to do the same. Many already are, in homes and backyards where any control over safety and sanitation is out the window. The CA State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology’s regular safety and sanitation standards are far beyond what the CDC is recommending today.
We think of our operations as closed to the public (with a prominent sign saying so on our front door). Only 2 stylists are allowed in our 7 chair salon at a time, with 1 client each (no double booking). Clients will text or call our assistants to check in when they arrive instead of in person. Waiting in their cars vs the reception area if needed. The door remains locked even during business hours to control the volume of entries. Masks are to be worn by every individual in the building. We already have custom black medical masks for our full time staff. In addition to these new efforts we will ramp up our standard sanitation protocols set in place by the CA BBC. Clippercide, quaternary ammonium compound (quats: the solution the CA BBC requires us to sterilize all implements with between clients) & bleach are used to sterilize all surfaces several times an hour. Client capes are washed after every use. Stylists will wear full-coverage smocks instead of the typical aprons. Anyone we know to have traveled recently we respectfully ask to reschedule, and of course anyone who isn’t feeling well.
I believe our restrictions should be customized per county. Solano and Santa Clara for example should have very different restrictions. Similarly, they should be customized per industry. Why can’t I reopen with support and respect? We are not a franchise walk-in salon. We do not have random customers milling around. We are a private salon working on a pre-booked appointment basis. Why can’t restaurants reopen taking limited parties on a reservation basis on a staggered schedule? Entrepreneurs are inventive. We are creative. We are determined. WE ARE CAPABLE!!!
I refuse to look my 3 sons ages 1, 3, and 6 in the eyes and tell them Mommy’s business is closed. The business I opened while pregnant. The business I kept afloat when I gave birth in my first year open. The business that survived my SELF EMPLOYED aka incomeless maternity leave with 2 young employees holding down the fort. The business that nearly destroyed my friendships, marriage, family due to my determination to keep pushing through all of those challenges. 2 years after opening I am FINALLY at a place of descent. With a full staff now of 5 employees and 10 Independent Contractors 2020 was supposed to be our year. I refuse to be taken out over something I can’t control. Not after all the hurdles I’ve conquered in the last 2 years.
We will “open” immediately. Allowing our Independent Contractors to see clients on the limited basis I outlined above.
